In late October a column ran in the Argus outlining the financial plight of the Our Place Christian Church’s free meal program. The Hillsboro church has served hot meals every Wednesday night for four years for those who need help.
The program has steadily grown to 150 meals served each week. That’s 600 meals a month. For many individuals and families, it is the only time they sit down to a hot meal during the week.
The church, however, is also struggling financially and will be forced to end the meals program unless the public can help. The columnist asked the public to step forward with donations of canned goods, paper plates, napkins and eating utensils, fresh fruits and vegetables (accepted on Sundays to remain fresh on Wednesdays), clothes (for its free distribution Clothes Closet), or cash that would go toward the purchase of needed items.
In asking the public to help in this effort, we at the Argus decided to do exactly what we asked others to do. A box of canned goods and supplies was delivered to the church on Tuesday.
State Rep. Shawn Lindsay, R-Hillsboro District 30, is one of those who read the column and has offered his assistance to the program. When we delivered our goods, Pastor Ken Bussell said that Lindsay’s office had contacted the church and he is very thankful for the help. He also thanks all the others who have responded.
We applaud Shawn Lindsay for stepping up to the plate, so that others will have something on theirs.
Readers who would like to help should note, the church building is part of the commercial center across from CostCo on NE 48th Avenue. “Our Place” is printed on the front of the church space.
If you are looking for a conventional church steeple, you might miss this church. But, please don’t. (gs)
